Product information "Thorsten spangenhelm"

This classical "spangenhelm" is based on historical models and has its roots in Northern Europe during the early Middle Ages. Even before that, it was worn by nomadic peoples during Late Antiquity. That's why it is ideally suited for use in the portrayal of Norse characters. This helmet type's name may be traced back to the German word "Spange", which was used to describe the metal strips used to join the metal sheets to create the helmet.

Material: steel plate
Sizes: small (56-58) and large (59-62)
Colous: blank and burnished

The spangenhelm was one of the most common types of head armour during Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. It as relatively easy to make, and production was even possible in larger quanitities without great effort. This made it very popular with a variety of warlike peoples. Typical for a spangenhelm is the head strip, which forms the base for the head plates. Oftentimes, this metal headband was aditionally adorned or reinforced. Archeological finds often indicate brow ornaments or other embellishments. The helmet's conical shape formed when the individual plates were rivited together. In many cases, chainmail mesh was added to the back part of the helmet. A solution for head protection that is as simple as it is clever.
