L’origine esatta della cotta di maglia non è nota, ma i primi reperti furono scoperti nel IV secolo a. C. nella palude di Hjortspring nell’attuale Danimarca. Nel XII-XIII secolo si sviluppò come pezzo di armatura più importante in Europa. Questo modello di cotta è adatta a uomini con circonferenza del torace media ed è larga abbastanza per essere indossata sopra il gambeson. Ha maniche lunghe ed arriva approssimativamente fino alle ginocchia.
